Tips and Techniques: Shiplap Blessed Sign

I was looking for inspiration to use shiplap in a new interesting way and I came across some designs for using it in a sign. Then I went on the hunt for shiplap and I found out that Lowe’s sells shiplap wood already painted on one side and just made my day. I came up with this cute sign that I am selling in my booth. This one takes a bit of work to do but I love how it turned out.

Products Needed

5 boards of 5.375 Rough Sawn Shiplap – 8 ft long (stained black, brown and gray and one painted white. I got two brown as I used it to make a turquoise color). If you are just making one and want to save money, get an unfinished one and cut into five boards 18 inches long and paint them.

1 – 1 x 2 x 8 inch pine board for frame

Thin board (2 boards about 21 inches in length) to use to keep the shiplap together – I used leftover flooring but you can use anything – 1 x 3 or even 1 x 2 to use to nail together.

Turquoise paint

White Satin paint

Brad Nails

Two D-Ring hangers

Blessed words from Michael’s
White putty

Steps

Cut your shiplap to 18 inch boards. Paint one of the brown boards the turquoise color and let dry. (See above if you use unfinished one.)

Take your two 21 inch boards and put onto back strategically placed apart about 5-8 inches and nail to the boards to keep them together. The boards slide into each other.

One board will have a part that sticks out that you will need to cut off that edge to make it even all the way around so that you can attach the frame.

Once the boards are attached together, measure around the edges to know what to cut each 1 x 2. To keep with the rustic piece, we did not to put the boards together at a 45.

Paint the 1 x 2 white. Once dried, brad nail the boards together around the edge. See picture at right. Brad the frame to the shiplap boards.

Paint the Blessed words white. Attach the Blessed words centered on the shiplap with the brad nail. If you want to make it look even better, you can use white putty to fill in the brad nail holes on the words.

Attach the two d-ring hangers (heavy duty) to back. We attached them to the 1 x 2s.
